Cape Verdean Museum Exhibit (CVME), a 501 (C) (3) non-profit organization, is hosting a fundraising event “An evening of Smooth Jazz and R&B with Mike Rollins and Neil Letendre”. The event will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 8:00pm at the Cape Verdean Progressive Center (CV Club), 329 Grosvenor Avenue, East Providence, Rhode Island.
The Cape Verdean Museum Exhibit is the only museum solely dedicated to celebrating the history and culture of Cape Verde and Cape Verdean Americans. The museum is now open for the season. Please see our newsletter for more information.
The museum’s exhibits, like Cape Verdeans themselves, cover a lot of territory. The museum
- explores the islands, from early European colonization and the slave-trade era to the nation’s current political and cultural life.
- follows the migration of people to the United States as whalers and seasonal cranberry pickers, as well as packet ship passengers settling in Fox Point and New Bedford.
- recognizes the work of notable Cape Verdean-Americans, from musicians and athletes to politicians and scholars in its Hall of Fame.
- shows the “back-and-forth rhythm” (as one reporter described it) between the Republic of Cape Verde and the people that have come to the United States
The CVME has one of the largest collections of books in English relating to the history and culture of Cape Verde and Cape Verdean-Americans.
