PAWTUCKET – Children off all ages and their families are invited to learn about and celebrate Cabo Verdean Culture on Saturday, Sept. 13, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Pawtucket Public Library.
Children’s author Janet Costa Bates will read her book, “Seaside Dream,” about a young girl who gives her grandmother a very special gift and encourages her to make a trip back to her home country of Cabo Verde. After reading, Bates will share with families about her experiences and writing process. She will also raffle off 10 copies of her book. Each person who attends the program will get a free raffle ticket.
For the final portion of the program, Michael Costa’s documentary “Proud to be Cape Verdean: A Look at Cape Verdeans in the Golden State” will be viewed. The one-hour documentary takes a look at the Cabo Verdean people and groups in California who have strong desire to maintain and celebrate their cultural identity.
Also on display will be the traveling exhibit from the Cape Verdean Museum in East Providence. A slideshow presentation featuring the Baxter Gallery of Images of Cabo Verde held at Rhode Island College’s Adams Library Special Collections will also be viewable during the event.
The family program is free and no registration is required.
