This series brings together scholars, artists, and special guests to present a virtual local and global visit to Cape Verde/eans through exhibitions, photographs, lectures, music, theater, spoken word, moving images, and food!

Language and music are the heart and soul of Cape Verdean culture and identity. Join our distinguished guests for an afternoon of lively discussion, music, performance and poetry!

12:30 PM-12:45 PM WELCOME & INTRODUCTION

12:45 PM-1:00 PM FILM:“Serenata de Amor”A Cape Verdean love story told in song. (USA 2013,15”) Executive Producer/co-writer: Claire Andrade-Watkins. Musical Theater/music (2014 Athens International Film & Video Festival; 2014 Madrid International Film Festival, Official Selection for Best Music in Film; 2014 Lucerne International Film Festival, Showcase selection)

1:00 PM-2:00 PM- Zerui dePina who is an acclaimed Cape Verdean musician will  give a demonstration and workshop on Cape Verdean music, and the roots of acoustic instruments.

2:00 PM-2:15 PM BREAK

2:15 PM-2:30 PM FILM: “Cape Verdean American Classical Music”. (USA 2000, l4’59”) Producer/Director: Claire Andrade-Watkins with “Flash” Tavares, Sr., Vickie Vieira and musicians recorded live at the Cape Verdean Progressive Club, June, 2000. East Providence, Rhode Island.

2:30 PM-3:30 PM Guest Artist: Shokanti, (Jose Monteiro) Theater and performance in Cape Verde.

3:30 PM-4:30 PM Guest Artist: Erik Andrade- Poetry/Spoken Word

4:30 PM-5:30 PM Cape Verdean food sampling!
