Morreu o compositor e exímio executante do funaná Séma Lópi – Sema Lopi, renowned funaná musician, dead at 72

Sema Lopi passed away this Wednesday morning at the age of 72. The musician had been admitted to Agostinho Neto Hospital in Praia some two weeks ago due to prostate and neurological difficulties.

The news of the death of the renowned funaná composer and accordion player came at approximately 7:30 this morning. Sema Lopi’s remains will be taken to his native Pedra Badejo, where he will be buried in a funeral ceremony being organized by the Santa Cruz municipal chamber and the Ministry of Culture.

The artist had been in the hospital in serious condition for the past two weeks. He had been unable to speak and had not been receiving visitors.

Simão Tavares Lopes, popularly known as Sema Lopi, was a farmer who also happened to be one of funaná’s best-known and most widely-respected composers and players of the diatonic accordion.

In the month of May, Sema Lopi was paid homage by the Santa Cruz municipal chamber and the people of the municipality. Indeed, the Santa Cruz School of Music already carries the musician’s name, as a result of his mastery of the traditional music of the island of Santiago and Cape Verde.
