The composer and interpreter Norberto Tavares died five years ago December 26, 2010.
According to sources close to the artist, Norberto complained of respiratory problems and was taken by ambulance to hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:26 am.
In July 2009, Norberto underwent a kidney transplant that was donated by community activist Carlos Tavares. Thereafter, the musician began feeling improvements and was later authorized by his doctor to suspend dialysis treatment.
Norberto Tavares was born in Assomada the June 6, 1956. An emblematic figure, the composer, singer, performer, and producer is considered one of the innovators of the music of Cape Verde. He was a member and founder of musical bands Black Power (Portugal) and Tropical Power (USA). Tavares left several albums and is the author of one of the most recognized Cape Verdean songs of all time “Nos Cabo Verde de Speranca”.
The Norberto Tavares Foundation, USA-based a non-profit organization created to educate and empower young people through the power of music, is currently planning a commemoration for what would have been Norberto Tavares’ 60th birthday . The event is schedule to take place on June 4, 2016 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
